Exposure Phase (S): After the sterilizer drain closes and the air is gone, steam is constantly injected into the chamber, quickly raising the pressure and temperature inside to a specified level.

Items are held at the sterilizing temperature for the predetermined period of time needed to sterilize them when the cycle moves into the exposure phase.

The sterilizer drain is opened and the steam is expelled during the exhaust phase (E), which is the last stage of the cycle. This depressurizes the vessel and enables the objects in the load to dry.
